About Us

Renee Cockrell, MAT, NBCT

I have been a high school teacher for twelve years -- teaching Advanced Placement and honors courses and serving as a University of Colorado Guest Lecturer at a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon high school for six years; teaching day-treatment, in-patient, and residential K-12 students in a psychiatric hospital school for two years; and teaching for four years at an Alternative Education Campus serving students with significant risk factors with a focus on equitable and engaging instructional practices. I am a National Board Certified Teacher, a Colorado Licensed Master Teacher, and a Colorado Licensed Principal with a Master's in Teaching the Arts and Humanities from Colorado College. I believe that education is the practice of freedom and that it fuels a vibrant and joyful life. I also believe that every individual can learn and achieve at high levels with proper supports. When I'm not working with students and teachers, I can usually be found trail-running, working in my vegetable garden with my canine companion, playing guitar, cooking up something delicious and home-grown, or with my nose in a book!

I have had the pleasure of teaching in Colorado Springs School District 11 for twelve years. My focus has been elementary education, teaching students in grades first through fifth. For much of that experience, I have taught in a highly impacted socioeconomic area of the school district, instructing many students for whom English is not their first language. I have recently obtained my principal license and look forward to future education opportunities in school administration.

I am currently a Student Support Specialist for the district focusing on attendance.  I collaborate with schools by providing prevention support and on-going support for educating students and families about the importance of strong attendance at all grade levels. My background as a school counselor and public safety officer have helped me to create a strong foundation for building and maintain relationships with students and families and utilizing all stake holders, to include community resources, in supporting the whole child model.  I enjoy keeping bees, mountain biking, baking and photography as time allows. I also enjoy spending time at the family cabin in the small town where my family has lived for generations. I am proud of my D11 education and excited that I get to work in D11.

It is an honor to say I have been working in Colorado Springs School District 11 since August 2002. Throughout these years, I have served in a variety of roles including School Psychologist, School Psychologist Department Chair, Social-Emotional Learning Specialist and most recently as the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Facilitator. District 11 is truly my extended family. I am grateful to work alongside such dedicated staff and to have the opportunity to serve our students, families, and community.
